Virginia requires employers to register with the Department of Taxation and Employment Commission. You can register for both online.

Department of Taxation Withholding Account Number

The Employment Commission will assign your unemployment insurance tax rate. 

Payroll Tax Deposit Schedules

All unemployment taxes are deposited quarterly.

The Department of Taxation will assign your withholding deposit schedule based on your average monthly withholding during the previous year. If your average monthly withholding was:

• less than $100, you’ll deposit quarterly;
• $100 to $1,000, you’ll deposit monthly;
• $1,000 or more, you’ll deposit semi-weekly.
